Reservists offer broad skill sets beneficial to
employee training
Many employers already recognise the benefits of
the transferable skills that the training for
Reservists instils in their employee. Research
carried out in June 2005 found that 76 in November 2003)
believe activities such as Reserve service
provide invaluable staff development and training.
Training and serving as a Reservist develops a
whole range of skills and qualities that can be
of direct relevance to the workplace, ranging
from core attributes ? such as teamwork,
leadership, self-confidence and adaptability ? to
practical knowledge of subjects as diverse as IT
and first aid.
Hands-on training in the field aids staff
development
Reserve training places great importance on
working in field conditions, i.e. outside the
comfort of the training centre. A high proportion
of this involves hands-on practice where
Reservists are assessed in realistic and
demanding situations. Civilian courses are rarely
able to emulate this, due to the cost and
resource implications, therefore employers of
Reservists are able to directly benefit from the
intensive training they receive.
In addition, it should be noted that much of the
training provided for Reservists is nationally
recognised, such as NVQs (National Vocational
Qualifications), SCOTVEC (Scottish Vocational
Education Council) and City and Guilds, which
companies can easily integrate into their own
staff development programmes.
Individual Reservist training worth £9,000 per
annum
According to research carried out by Leeds
Business School, the value to civilian employers
of the training received by members of the
Reserve Forces is a staggering £377 million per
year. Reservists undertake training throughout
the year and learn skills that many organisations
do not have the money or time to provide. Many of
these skills are directly transferable to the
civilian workplace and would cost an employer
over £9,000 per year to purchase commercially. In
contrast, the average employee training is worth
only £822 per year.
In order to raise awareness of the significant
benefits that Reservists offer their civilian
employers, SaBRE is campaigning for all UK
businesses to pledge their support by signing the
Statement of Employer Support. Over 100 companies
have already given their public backing of the
Reserve Forces in this way.
